to market, to market - 5 june

I'm sad to say I've missed the downtown farmers market the past two Saturdays. However, my weekend indolence led to a delightful weekday discovery - the Tuesday evening Beaverdale Farmers Market! We just so happened to catch opening night, and plan to go again this week. With plenty of food vendors to give us dinner options and everything from bacon to spinach for sale, it's the perfect mid-week excursion.

Last week, after noshing on some delicious gyros and grilled chicken, we meandered through the market, trying to decide what to bring home for dinner the following night. We ended up choosing some Polish sausage, which turned out to be absolutely fabulous... and of course disappeared before I could snap any photos. Maybe next time...

We also couldn't resist grabbing a jar of Juan O'Sullivan's habanero hot salsa... it was the clear winner after sampling several varieties throughout the market. And we didn't want to risk the consequences of double-dipping, proclaimed by a sign at their booth as 'a crime punishable by hard labor on the pepper farm.' Safer to buy a large jar and enjoy all the dipping we wanted at home. An added bonus? A punch card, good for a free pint of salsa after buying five. (A big jar, by the way, counts for two punches!)

Another impulse buy was a jar of black raspberry jam from Shades of Green. Funny story about this... as I Googled 'Shades of Green,' I found a result on a blog I've read and enjoyed, A Little Bit of Spain in Iowa. Turns out that the author of this lovely blog is starting a farmers market endeavour this year, selling plants, baked goods, and other products - like the awesome jam we bought! Such a small world we live in. :)

Cheers!
