to market, to market - 26 may

This past weekend, for the first time since moving here, I finally made it to the famous Downtown Farmers Market!

My brother was visiting us for the weekend, and we'd planned an entire day of sights and food and drink, beginning at 9 a.m. with the five minute walk to Court Ave. The market was every bit as wonderful as I had heard - sprawling for blocks in all directions, bustling with people browsing through stands of produce, cheese, flowers, kettle corn, wine, meat, baked goods, crafts, smoothies, breakfast burritos, coffee, naan, cabbage rolls... you name it.

I hadn't planned on buying much this week. Mostly I just wanted to have an idea of what to expect (read: how many shopping bags to bring) next Saturday. Currently on my shopping list: asparagus, goat cheese, fresh dill, and perhaps a few cuts of meat. There were a few things, however, that we couldn't resist picking up this week...

1) Sorghum. I don't really consider my pantry to be complete without a jar of sorghum. The perfect thing for drizzling over corn bread, it's also excellent for making a batch of molasses cookies. I have never purchased any sorghum besides Maasdam's (I found a pretty cool article about Maasdam's sorghum here; you should check it out!). Seeing a sorghum jar without a red label honestly looks a little foreign, but this sorghum from our Southern neighbour, Missouri, is pretty tasty.

2) Mustard. I LOVE mustard. From classic yellow to spicy horseradish to exotic cranberry, mustard is hands-down my favourite condiment. The Denison Mustard Co. stand at the farmers market offered six varieties of mustard; we chose this extra hot 'sweat & tears,' flavoured with habanero powder. Deeeeee-licious!

3) Cheese curds. We couldn't pick just one, so we got a trio of original cheddar, tomato garlic, and chili pepper from Milton Creamery. They have a pretty neat website where you can read about some of their cheeses (Prairie Breeze, I'm gunning for you next week!), watch a video about the cheese-making process, and even find recipes. Personally, I'm tempted to throw some of these curds over french fries and smother it all with gravy for a quick late-night snack of poutine. Uh, yum!

Well, those were my great finds this week. I'll be back this coming weekend for sure... stay tuned, and check out your local farmers market as well!

Cheers!
