vacation/novation

Bienvenue en Louisiane!

Has it really been over a week since my last post?! I swear vacation is a time warp. Between the most epic New Years Eve ever and a 17-hour road trip to Louisiana, life has gone by much too quickly. Of course, there's been a plethora of food experiences along the way... here are a few.

Lambert's Cafe - Sikeston, MO
Since my dad's family lives in Louisiana and my mom's family lives in Iowa, I've spent a lot of time travelling through Missouri. Sikeston, almost exactly halfway between the endpoints of the trip, happens to be home to Lambert's - 'home of the throwed rolls' - and is always where we stop. Seriously, if you're in Missouri, and you love food, you should probably try this. Yes, they really do throw giant, hot dinner rolls at you.

Sake Sushi - Alexandria, LA
One of my dad's favourite sushi places. I've had the pleasure of eating at Sake twice now. The fish is always fresh and lovely, and several rolls feature local seafood like crawfish and oysters. (I loooooooove fried oysters.) If you sit at the sushi bar, the sushi chefs might even make something for you on the house.

Hokus Pokus Liquor - Alexandria, LA
Given my [apparently hereditary] affinity for a good drink, my dad decided we should stop at Hokus Pokus to pick up some things. I made him buy some Guinness Draught so we can make car bombs using the pint glasses I got him at the Guinness Storehouse at St. James's Gate in Dublin. I also picked up a few beers I'd never seen before, including LA 31 Bière Pâle, a Louisiana Pale Ale. I'm saving this one to share with my drinking buddies back home, probably to be enjoyed with some homemade gumbo... another post may be in the making here.

Home Cooking - Daddy's Place
And of course in the midst of all these excursions, there has been much delicious-ness taking place at the house! Just today, for example, we started out with a hearty breakfast of homemade biscuits and gravy, real grits, and thick-cut bacon, accompanied by the best coffee in the world and a modified screwdriver. My dad's fiancee is a wonderful cook. In fact, at this very moment I'm sitting in the kitchen enjoying the gorgeous spicy smell of a freshly baked syrup cake. (Do check out the rest of her blog as well... it's fantastic!!)

Cheers!
